spoiler-free review
sting is a fun enjoyable movie, it has great well written characters, and makes the most out of it’s low budget, it has way more creative ideas than you expect. and the relationship between the characters is very good. the spider isn’t in the movie as much as you’d expect since it had a low budget. it has great performances especially from young actress Alyla Browne, which is great since kid actors usually suck but she is great, her character has a ton of personality, she is very smart and a great protagonist to follow whos really well written but some people ma not like her since she has teen angst but I think her writing is realistic and shes likable enough, and they give every character personality even the small ones who are just victims. it does have a bit too many fake scares scares, jumpscare oh wait it was just cords, jumpscare oh wait it was just a dog, jumpscare oh wait it was just a plant. and I feel like the third act sneaks up on you and comes out of nowhere. i also feel like the family stuff didn’t mix as well with the fun spider stuff.
spoiler review/ plot breakdown
the movie begins with a shot of a tiny tiny spaceship crashing into to a dollhouse, which immediately sets the movies fun tone as the spider CGI walks through the dollhouse making the spider look big. a young charlote walks through the vents and plays with the dollhouse and finds the spider than steals her. then leaves before the person who owns the apartment shes trespassing finds her. the vents in this movie are way too big though vents are normally super tiny. we are introduced to her dad who is nervous about being a stepfather and is a comic book artist he wants to create a relationship with charlote but it is hard for him since she doesn’t like him, charlote is sad about her dad leaving, there is the mom who is kinda underwritten, but she is sad and doesn’t want the husband to leave and wants charlote to be happy. these are all super interesting characters who are so well written especially the dad. we get our first spider kill who is a woman who is sad about her children dying and is depressed, I love how they give all of the a huge amount of side characters personality and go watch the movie since i wont be able to mention all the side characters here. but the spider jumps into her mouth and kills her. there are two spiders in this movie, meanwhile charlote trapped the spider in a jar which she names sting, she learns it can mimic sound and creates acid and grows really fast. charlote goes to someone in the building who knows a lot about animals, this is maybe my favorite side character, he speaks like a robot and says everything with a completely straight face and is really funny, he asks if he can keep the spider to study, she agrees as long as she doesn’t tell her dad. the dad finds her body and calls the police, him and charlote fight since he knows she was keeping a giant spider. He tells her her real dad is not in tialand like her mom said, there relationship is so interesting throughout the movie. Another thing I forgot to mention is the fact that she is better at drawing than him so that creates a bunch of situations. and she thinks a character that dies is based on her dad, which is another interesting idea, the dad also punches the tv since he feels like he is going crazy and then him and the mom fight then the spider comes and kidnaps them, while charlotte is wearing the loudest headphones in the world that blocks her from hearing her parents screaming and a giant spider walking around the house, then the spider kidnaps the baby. meanwhile in another apartment the spider kidnaps another person, with a jumpscare. Charlotte goes to fight both the spiders and kills them both. at the end of the movie it is revealed that the dad survived and the mother also survived, which I would have preferred it if she died because that would have been emotional, the spider also kills someone in the basement by ripping their arms off offscreen, but we get a delicious blood spray. then its revealed the spider laid eggs before it died, which it is just because they want there to be a sequel and I thought it was stupid how they did that.
