to determine if 2024 is a good year for horror I will be looking at the good films and the bad films and the box office performances and reviews and comparing it to the previous year and eventually awards when I update this at the end of 2024. as always green means not scary yellow means medium scary and red means pretty scary.

we didn't have any good films in January we got our typical shitty January horror film night swim which made $54.1 million and was a huge success as shitty pg 13 horror movies usually do. and it got a 20 percent on rotten tomatoes

in February we had the great but divisive Lisa Frankensiten which I am certain will become more popular in 10 years like Jennifer's Body did unfortunately it failed which is sad because it is the rare good pg 13 horror film. it was a failure making 9.9 million off of a 13 million dollar budget and getting 51 percent on rotten tomatoes. so this month was a failure in both reviews and box office performance.

In March we got Late Night with the Devil and Immaculate which both got positive reviews and good box offices. Late Night got $12.7 million and Immaculate got 27.2 million off of a 9 million dollar budget the average review score for this month was 83.5 and the average box office was 19.95 which is lower than last year with Scream 6 making 169.9 million but has lower average review score with 76 percent and did 23.5 as much as last year at the box office. so this year was a success in box office performances and reviews, oh shit I almost forgot about the piece of shit imaginary which was successful despite getting shit reviews.

in April this year, we got The First Omen which is a masterpiece, and failed at the box office making 53.9 off of a 30 million dollar budget and we got Abigail which also failed making 42.1 off of a 28 million dollar budget and we got sting which made 2.3 million. compared to last year, we got the highly successful Evil Dead Rise, Renfield's failure, and the box office success of the pope's exorcist starring Russel Crowe. we had an average box office of 32.77 and an average review score of 78 compared to last year we had an average review score of 64 million and an average box office of 83.6333 million. so this month was a failure in horror making multiple films that failed at the box office but were a success in the reviews since all of them were liked by critics.

In May we had I saw the TV Glow and in a violent nature which I saw the TV Glow failed and in a violent nature is unknown because its budget hasn't been released. this month was a failure for Hroror at the box office but not in reviews. I almost forgot about the little shit tarot, which was successful but failed critically. oh dang, I almost forgot the worst movie ever the stranger's chapter 1 which did well at the box office despite shit reviews.

In June we had a quiet place on day one which is still in theaters and is super successful the exorcism failed and made 7.2 million so that is an average of 101.2 million and an average review score of 57.5, making this a mid-month for horror movies. Last we had The Boogeyman which was successful but had a lower average in box office but a higher average in review score. (note i forgot the watchers that came out in june so this doesnt include that, but it failed making june a bad month for horror in reviews and box office)

so far in the first half of the year we have had an average box office of 45.435 million and an average known budget is 25.075 so that is a failure but to be clear don't know the budget for some of these movies the average review score is 46.425 which isn't good. this year has been a mid-year for horror films with them not making that much and a large amount of them failing and a mixed review score.

in July we have Maxxxxine which is box office numbers aren't looking that good and longlegs is looking to be a success. but they both have positive reviews with a 73 and an 89 making an average review score of 81 percent. compared to last year with Talk to me and Insidious the red door which both were extremely successful and talk to Me got great reviews but people hated insidious the red door which makes an reviews office for 2023 June 67. the average box office is 140.65 which has higher reviews for this year but a lower box office.

EXPECTATIONS FOR LATER

cuckoo already has positive reviews with a 81 and i expect it to make 7-12 million opening weekend and 30-40 million overall. and speak no evil which dead meat has praised, since blumhouse films usually do well i expect 15-20 million especailly if it gets good reviews and 60-80 million overall. alien romulus i expect 30-40 million since alien films usually do well and 115-130 overall. never let go which i expect 5-10 million it seems pretty low budget so it will probably be successful since cheap survival apocolyptic horror films usually do and 20-35 million overall.

smile 2 i expect 20-30 million since the first one did well even though it will most likely suck and 115-150 million overall, terrifier 3 which i expect 3-5 million which will also probably suck since the whole wierd clown does gory kills thing got old and 20-25 million overall. and nosferatu which will probably do 15-30 million since vampire movies have been failing recently and 50-60 million overall.

overall thoughts

overall this has been a pretty mid year for horror movies we have gotten ton masterpieces but a lot and a lot of shit, and horror movies have been performing poorly at the box office more than usual. and if my expectations are correct it probably wont be a good year for horror fims.
