best horror movies of the 20s so far

 these are just my opinions and you may dislike some of these movies, i have not seen every horror movie of the 20s and i will update this list as more awesome movies come out, I love horror and hope you enjoy this list, these movies are not rankings they are in order of when they came out. also zero spoilers allowed. If you're new to horror red means very scary, yellow means kind of scary and green means not that scary.

1. Gretel and hansel

this movie has beautiful lighting and great directing but the story is find but not anything unique, it had some creepy moments and good performances. the ending wasnt as climactic as i wanted it to be. but people were too harsh on this movie.

2.the invisible man

the invisible man is a masterpiece, it is an amazing combination of themes and style after leigh whannell made upgrade people knew he was talented,  after two films he has already shown he has his own sense of style. this movie is super suspenseful and creative and doesn't rely on jumpscares. i would definitely recommend this movie. it has a great pace and shocking moments and great twists, and this movie has an oscar worthy performance from elisabeth moss. best horror movie of 2020.

3. freaky

freaky is a fun,  bloody slasher. it is easy to watch and always entertaining, and has creative ideas, it is funny and has some great and memorable kills, it explores its themes in a great way not making it too obvious, it has some really funny moments, it has some great horror references, the movie doesn't take itself too seriously but takes itself seriously enough that it's serious moments come off as sincere instead of cringe. christopher landon has shown he is good at writing characters and their relationships. the side characters are very well written and memorable too.

4. host

The host is a terrifying, enjoyable, super creative found footage movie, it is a must watch for horror fans. you really feel like you're in the movie with them. most horror movies are lucky if they have a couple good scares this movie has a TON of good scares. it feels so realistic too. it also has some nice kills.

5. wrong turn

this movie has good characters, creative ideas, but requires a lot of suspension of disbelief since this has got a lot of plotholes, but overall its an entertaining watch with some good kills and characters i am able to care about

6. a quiet place part 2

a quiet place 2 is a sequel that's surprisingly better than the original, it has some suspenseful moments, it does a good job at exploring the world of this universe, it shows the CGI monsters really well, it is nice to see great CGI in a horror movie, it is nice to see them on the first day too and I like how they did that, the middle act is definitely the weakest part, and a character makes a super stupid decision, and I don't like how everybody splits up, and I don't like the ending, but I still like this movie overall.

7. old

old might be my least favorite movie on this list but it is super creative and worth a watch. It's always entertaining, always interesting, it showed a lot of situations and if not all of them added to the story they were always interesting and it was always nice to see my questions answered.

8. the night house

the night house has some flaws but its still an enjoyable, creative movie with a good twist and memorable ending, it is definitely worth a watch and explores its themes well.

9. last night in soho

last night in soho has great cinematography, a creative and interesting story, great twists, well written, enjoyable and super entertaining, and looks super high budget for a horror movie, and has some really good moments. best horror movie of 2021               

        10.    Malignant 

Malignant is a fun bonkers film that doesn’t take itself too seriously and has some nice delicious gore, it’s super entertaining has a great villain and has a lot of fun and has a memorably bonkers twist James wan has made a fun entertaining giallo film

                           11. Fear street part one 1994

Fear street is pretty good it still feels like a movie made in 2021 no matter how many 90s songs they put on the soundtrack and they put a lot, but it has nice references to other horror movies and is well written and has some interesting ideas and some amazing kills also you can really see the influence movies like scream have on this movie.

12. fear street part 2 1978

fear street 2 is a suprisingly good sequel with a great cast a great story well written characters great kills and shows love to horror movies and is a bloody fun time. Also, some great set pieces and great sound design. also you can really see the influence movies like friday the 13th and sleepaway camp have on this movie

13. fear street part 3 1666

fear street part 3 is a amazing movie that expertly sticks the landing and has a great ending. this movie has great writing great acting an amazing story amazing twists. ill be completely honest i wasnt very into these movies when i first started watching them but now i love them. it has two movies in one and usually there would be one half that i liked more than the other but in this movie i love both of the halfs so much. these movies expertly executed trilogys this good because of leigh janeiak and her brilliance behind the camera i hope she has more movies after this i can tell she put a lot of efffort into these 3 movies and i give her a ton credit and she has already mastered her own sense of style. i love how each movie got better and better.

14. VHS 94

i liked all of the short stories ecept for the last one and it is very impressive what they were a ble to get away with with such a low budget, this is the best one i have seeen in the franchise since the stories are just so good and fun and i really enjojyed this one and i loved the gore

15. scream 5

scream 5 is an amazing enjoyable movie, great killer reveal, great pacing and definitely one of the best screams. there are some great kills, shocking moments, dewey is great in this movie, even though sidney, gale and dewey aren't in the movie a lot they make the most of the time there given. it can feel a bit like it's trying too hard sometimes.

16.bodies bodies bodies

bodies bodies bodies is a creative fun movie with great writing, a great killer reveal, and super entertaining. it explores its themes well in a way that isn't too obvious, and I like how it can explore its idea without seeming offensive and shows that these people are awful as individuals and don't represent anybody. it has super well written characters and you understand what all of them are like, it is super hilarious and does a great job at giving some scenes funny moments then going to serious moments really well and does a good job at creating a consistent tone. I normally hate it when the main characters are assholes but this movie did it in a unique way so it doesn’t bother me. 

17. X

X is super creative, super enjoyable, super bloody, and one of the best slashers i have seen in a while. it is very different from most slashers and is super unique. it explores its themes so well and made me sad watching it. and it is a horror movie that understands there can be no horror if there isn't any love, I love the singing part. the movie is super well edited too. most horror movies judge characters for the actions that the characters make in this movie and I like how even though some of them die the movie doesn't judge them, and I love how most slashers have awful and annoying characters but this movie has great and well written characters, sure we don't know a lot about them aside from the day this movie takes place but this movie is so well written and all the characters are so likeable I don't even care. the villains are also super complex and well written and even though there actions are inexcusable you understand them and feel bad for them.

18.the black phone

the black phone is a super creative super entertaining and i love it and would definitely recommend it. it has great writing, great characters, and I love how none of the calls were useless, and it has some truly sad moments. and has an Oscar worthy performance from Ethan hawke and Mason thames, which is great because kid actors aren't usually that good and he is so good in this movie.

19. barbarian

barbarian is a fun enjoyable movie, it's creative and worth a watch. and has some great and interesting twists, does a great job switching characters, and it explores its themes well and in many different ways, you are always questioning things and always wondering what will happen next. it is super well written, well acted, and very creative. go into this without knowing anything about it since it will make this movie better for you.

20.  pearl

pearl is a masterpiece, it is enjoyable, creative, well paced, well written, and an amazing film, definitely worth a watch. it is super disturbing and shocking and great moments that are hard to watch, and has an incredible oscar worthy performance from mia goth. she has to show a lot of emotions and she does it well, the last shot must have been so hard for her to do for a couple of minutes. it is disturbing to watch her go insane. this is the best prequel I have seen.

21. hellraiser

a great movie, it's a bit too slow paced, but it's still a very good requel, just as good as the first one, and the cenobites looked beautiful. my only real complaint is that too much of this movie is characters talking especially pinhead, but all of the characters are well written though so it's only really annoying how pinhead talks so slowly.

22. smile

smile is a terrifying, creepy, enjoyable, you never feel safe and you always feel like something bad could happen, it's so impressive how they manage to make you think that something that is good like a smile seem so scary every time you see it, and has an oscar worthy performance from sosie bacon. this movie has very well written conversations and rose is a very complex character. I know everybody would choose X or pearl but I think this is my favorite horror movie of 2022

                23. orphan first kill

Orphan first kill is a super super fun super enjoyable, great movie with a great twist, it is kinda weird that a 26 year old old is playing an 8 year old and you definenlty notice it but they do a decent enough job so it doesn’t distract you too much, it has a great twist and is super campy, but it isn’t as good as the first one, and these people aren’t even esters first kill

24. terrifier 2

it is way better than the first one, it may be the bloodiest movie i have watched, it has a great final girl, and a good story and very well executed, and art of the clown has some very great moments. it has probably the most violent kill i have ever seen in my life, it has some shocking moments, all of the characters are well written, and it suggests a bright future for the franchise. and is one of the best slashers that has come out in years, and probably the best final girl I have seen in years. this movie improves on the original in every single way, its a great sequel and a great movie and i am excited for terrifier 3, i feel like in 2030 we will have 5 terrifier movies.

25.  the menu

the menu is a creative, enjoyable movie, the menu has great performances from everybody, and it is so fun and it has so fun with its effed up concept, it's ending might not be very satisfying but I had so much fun watching it that I didn't care.

                          26. Men

Men is a strange weird movie with some very memorable scenes filled with symbolism and metaphors and is super unique my only complaint is that the pace is way to slow 

                    27. Fresh

Fresh is a weird movie that has good commentary it’s creative and enjoyable with a great first act and third act but I didn’t like the middle act I thought it was too slow and boring and a lot of useless stuff there was also too many songs and goofy scenes, but I think this is a super well written movie and super well acted. It’s unique and I like how they made a horror movie that’s also a rom com at the start I haven’t seen many horror movies that do that. I also liked the story                 

28. Nope

Nope is a fun enjoyable movie with a really cool monster. It’s not very subtle about its themes though. The movie also has this useless monkey that could have been removed and the story would be the same and they just put it there to make the movies themes more in your face. The first half of the movie is also pretty boring. There are also some cool moments. The alien cgi looks really good at the end. I don’t really consider this a horror movie but I guess if other people do why not

                          29. Bones and all

Bones and all is an amazing masterpiece it does things that horror movies rarely do and is super creative, great characters great shots and super great story. It’s slow but never boring and some great kills.

                        30. Prey

Prey isn’t really a horror film but I guess if other people consider it one why not. Prey is a creative enjoyable movie. It has some nice action, some amazing kills and some great acting, and some great cgi and a great story the only thing that’s not great is the writing the dialogue is kinda mid it feels unrealistic but most of the movie isn’t talking so I don’t really mind. The movie also had amazing sound design. it does have the basic thing movies often have of a woman in a group of men and the men dont take her seriously because shes a woman then she proves shes stronger then them, but it does that trope well enough. also I like how the first half an hour is just character development and her learning to be strong and how she doesn't begin the movie as a badass and she has to earn it.

31.VHS 99

vhs 99 is a very good and creepyy and fun movie that gives you stress and enxiety and i liked all of the anthologies in this movie so much                                       

                            2023

32.  m3gan

m3gan is a masterpiece, it is weird at times, does a super good job at exploring its themes, and m3gan is a super great villain and i can't wait for the sequel. and the main characters are also really interesting and well written. I know everybody would pick talk to me but I think this is my favorite horror movie of 2023

33. scream vi

scream vi is a enjoyable, creative, entertaining movie and is a must watch for scream fans and slasher fans, with pretty good killer reveals, and I like how they brought Kirby back, but I would have preferred more people dying barely any of the new characters introduced died, and continues the trend of there being no bad scream movie

34. evil dead rise

evil dead rise is a fun movie, and this movie is really bloody, and a great evil dead movie, and continues the trend of there being no such bad thing as a bad evil dead movie. and is definitely the most unique horror movie in this franchise, and takes a different approach to a classic concept.

35. renfield

Renfield is a super fun bloody time and it has a great story well written characters and some nice gore and some great performances and some great dark humor.

36.  talk to me

talk to me is fun, has some shocking and disturbing moments, has a great and memorable ending that people will be thinking about after the credits, it explores its themes super well, my only complaint is i like it when foreshadowing isn't super obvious and there is a scene in this movie that is so obviously foreshadowing. all of the characters are very well written.

37. The blackening

the blackening is a funny, enjoyable horror movie that's super entertaining and a good killer reveal. it has some great comedy, explores its themes well, all of the characters are very well written, it does the horror tropes in a great way.

38.  the nun 2

the nun 2 is a fun, enjoyable movie, it's a HUGE improvement over the garbage first movie, sure it has a bit too many jumpscares but it focuses on its story and characters well enough, it's definitely worth a watch.

39. a haunting in venice

a haunting in venice takes a whodunit and greatly executes it as a ghost horror movie story, I love horror movie whodunits and it's always fun trying to guess who it is, and with a great killer reveal, and it's super entertaining.

40. saw x

saw x is one of the best saw movies and is really bloody movie and focuses on jigsaw and his emotions really well and i was really happy to see the victims die. it has some pretty good traps too. it isn't just your average saw movie where it opens up with a trap and there are a bunch of traps the whole movie with a ton of cops, this movie is more about the characters and not really about the traps, it takes an hour to get to the trap stuff, and Tobin bells performance is amazing. even though his actions are unacceptable you do understand why he's doing it, I am excited to see saw 11 since this movie suggests a bright future for this franchise, in 2040 we are going to have 20 saw movies aren't we.

41.   totally killer

Totally killer is enjoyable, fun and easy to watch, i do wish it was bloodier like freaky. i really enjoyed the relationship between the main character and her past mom, these horror version of classics really have great relationships between moms and daughters, this movie, freaky, happy death day 2U.

42. thanksgiving

thanksgiving is a bloody fun horror movie and a must watch for horror movie fans, and especially slasher fans, it's easy to watch and doesn't take itself too seriously and is very fun. its a must watch for slasher fans it takes everything i love about slashers and does a great job at it, my only complaint is the side characters aren't well written and are barely in the movie and the most memorable things about them is there deaths.

43. no one will save you

no one will save you is a great movie, it is super unique and i love how there is zero words but that does make for a less entertaining movie but a more interesting movie. the cgi looks very good nearly flawless which is suprising since horror movies dont usually have good cgi. the production design is great, the acting is great. there were some parts wehre i was like a person would say something in that situation and she doesnt say anything. this movie is also very creepy and does a great job at that. they also didnt do the thing that horror movies would usually do with one person where you hear there thoughts or they call someone else a bunch. it also goes on for a bit too long. this movie does what its supposed to but also does more it goes places that you wouldnt expect it asks questions you wouldnt expect. i love it when a movie does what its supposed to do and more. the alien designs though are very basic and generic and arent unique designs.

44. lisa frannkenstien

lisa frankenstien is a fun goofy movie with great with great writing by diablo cody, and it has great and colorful lightng. i didnt like how goofy the mother character was when i first saw it since i thought she was so goofily mean but then i realized that all of the characters wer goofy and that thats just the tone of the movie. i really liked the sister character she was so caring and nice. but it also feels like it has more style than substance.

45. late night with the devil

late night with the devil is a creative fun movie and the forty seconds at the end is very bloody and entertaining but after that great forty seconds it keeps going and has a bad ending though, even though i don't like the ending since he got super unrealistically lucky i still love this movie and still think its great and worth a watch. the movie explores its themes well and in a not too obvious way and the acting is great and the main character is very well written and you really get to understand what he's like and you really feel bad for lilies chartacher. most of the film is you waiting for the demon girl to snap and when she does it's really entertaining and gives us some memorable kills but it's a bit too short i would have preferred a bit more of her kicking everybody's ass, but it doesn't bother me too much, there is also a character that takes up a bunch of time at the start and doesn't really add much to the story but i understand why they did it, it's to make the movie feel more realistic so that doesn't bother me too much either, even though i have said complaints i still love this movie and think its a must watch for horror fans.

46.  Immaculate

immaculate is an entertaining, fun, bloody, enjoyable horror movie. It's not amazing but its pretty good. this movie went by so fast and my only complaint is that the main character is very underwritten She spends more time screaming then talking. the first act is definitely the weakest part but the third act is immaculate and the kills at the end are great and i love the last one take and shot and the third act is really fun, this movie doesn't waste time too she finds out this place is evil very quickly. It's a fun, quick, entertaining movie.38.  

47. the first omen

the first omen is a great complex enjoyable movie that doesn't rely on jumpscares and has a great story and a geat pace. the main character is well written and complex, it has some truly shocking moments that had me covering my eyes, it isn't just ghost torturing this girl like every horror movie and like the trailer made it seem like it is a truly creative and original horror movie with a story that isn't just spooky ghost stuff it has plot twists and a great story. and has a great performance from nell tiger free. this is the top 3 horror prequels and is a prequel/sequel that lives up to the original. there aren't a lot of horror movies like this one. so far as I am writing this in early 2024 this is my favorite horror movie so far this year.

                           48. Sting

Sting is a fun movie that focuses on its complex characters and there relationships and gives every character a personality even the minor ones, it had great performances, a great villain, I don’t like all the fake scares though and it focuses on its characters too much and focuses on the spider too little, I did like the kills and it is enjoyable and entertaining, the third act does kinda come out of nowhere though, and I don’t like how the spider lays eggs at the end of the movie though, but I still think it’s worth a watch and enjoyable             

49. Abigail

Abigail is a fun super bloody movie. It has a great cast and in most movies there’s like one or two characters you remember but in this movie I am going to remember all of them with the standout being Dan Steven’s he died such a good job at being an asshole his performance is one of the bests I’ve seen in a horror movie in a while, all of the characters get a lot of personality and are all interesting. And Alesha wiers performance is really good but there is one scene where she has to cry and she is smiling and the cry looks fake but other than that she gives a really strong performance. And mellissa Berraras performance improves with every movie she’s in. And the movie has some really fun scenes. And the movie has a lot more emotional scenes than people expect. This movie does have a bit too little of Abigail and I don’t like how the villain changes every act and some scenes do drag on a bit and I did predict the order people died. But those complaints are small I still loved the move and thought it was very entertaining and fun to watch. The movie also had great sound design with a great soundtrack. This movie also had some great kills and explosions

50. in a violent nature

in a violent nature has some flaws but is overall a good movie. it has some awesome kills and the filming location is very pretty and johnny is a great horror villain and has a great design choice and the movie isnt as boring as i thought it would be even though it is mostly a guy walkign through the woods. but the ending sucked and should have been removed but i understand they needed it to be 90 minutes and having that useless car scene did it. it has a super creative idea and executes it well. but the characters and the writing for the teens is awful but thats kinda the point and the film knows it and is self aware so that didnt bother me that much.

51. A Quiet Place Day One

A Quiet Place Day One is pretty good, joseph quinn and Lupita Nyong'o have a really good dynamic and chemistry, it has some really great action scenes and always manages to keep you on the edge of your seat, it has a really sweet ending that makes you want to cry. it has such good characters which is impressive because they barely speak and you can really tell what their personality is like despite having barely any lines. they showed way less of the monsters in this movie than in the last movie. The cat was adorable. btw this isnt a spoiler but I am now a professional kill counter and I counted 21 kills that might be wrong but thats what I counted that is pretty good but most of them were offscreen. I love how they took the setting to New York. the movie does a good job at making you feel like your in the world of the characters. the movie was a bit boring at times though and the pacing was a bit uneven.

52. MaXXXine

Maxxxine is a great movie, its immaculately paced scenes flow smoothly and the film is never boring its fun, it takes the familiar and puts a fresh twist on it, Maxine was a decent final girl in X but in this movie, she is a badass, she is a complex unique final girl and to be honest probably my favorite final girl of the past couple of years. it has some great gore and great performances. Mia Goth is a star and is amazing in every role she is in she does a great job, but she should be more famous. it isn't nearly as good as I was hoping but it is almost there. i love how I got an amazing trilogy in just 2 years. Ti West is a horror god at this point. this is the best horror trilogy ever made. it is amazing how my ranking of these films can change depending on how I am feeling and my mood which is a beautiful thing. every movie has 3 different distinct styles 3 different subgenres of horror 3 different years. I love how they could have made Maxine not be traumatized and their excuse would be "it's not real bro it's just a movie" but they make her traumatized by the events of X and have flashbacks which makes it feel realistic. now one of the biggest questions is do you need to see X and Pearl before seeing this movie, i would say no but this is coming from someone who has seen both of them, i saw this with my dad and he had only seen, Pearl not X and he had a hard time following the story because of it. this movie is full of style too.

52. Longlegs

longlegs is a great movie but has some obvious flaws, first, not much of the stuff adds to the story, and Miaka Monroe's performance isn't always the best I don't know if it's because of how she was directed or her acting style for this movie. but this movie does a great job at getting dread and keeping it. this movie is super creepy and has a nightmarish unforgettable performance from Nicolas Cage he is definitely the best part of this movie. The plot twist is a little dumb but it is executed well. it doesn't have a lot of gore but there is one scene where I loved the gore. it does a great job at the mystery element and making you ask questions. The film is creative too and you can tell the amount of imagination that went into writing the script.
